What Does a Well-Rounded Fighter Need? (Part One)

I like to think of myself as a “jack of all trades” type of guy.  There are a lot of people that don’t see the value in it; They think people should have a speciality, that everyone needs to be the best at something.  I personally think that’s a load of crap, and i’m sure that any MMA fighter would agree. If you want to be the best in the cage, you need to be multifaceted, but what does it mean to be a well-rounded fighter?

Passion.

Above all else, passion is probably one of the most valued traits in this sport.  You don’t get into one of these rings unless you know this is what you want to do.  It’s what fuels the fighters, and makes them go through the countless hours endured through training, weight-cutting, loses, etc.

Versatility.

It’s called Mixed Martial Arts.  Knowing when to change it up is vital.  MMA demands far more skill than just knowing how to throw a punch or a kick.  Paying attention to your opponent’s weaknesses, and being able to switch up your moves to throw them off will be the difference between being the victor, or hanging your head down.

Discipline.

Like most goals worth achieving in life, you need the discipline of a military recruit.  It’s a day-in day-out lifestyle.  If you’ve ever been involved in sports, you know that the first thing you’re taught is the value of respect and discipline.

The list can go on, and it will. Check back for part two later this week.
